Ideopolis 2020 is our three year research programme dedicated to looking at what cities should look like in 2020.
We will develop a vision of what the economy will look like in 2020, what sustainable economic growth might be characterised by, and what the drivers of success are, learning from UK and international cities. We will then ‘backcast’ to the present day to identify what we need to do now in order to achieve this vision of success.
Specific projects will include:
• Anchor institutions: How can cities capitalise upon their ‘anchor institutions’ – the universities, hospitals and museums that are embedded in places and are vital sources of leadership, skills and jobs?
• Innovation: How can cities enhance their innovation capacity?
• Low skills: What is the impact of a shift towards a more knowledge intensive economy on those with low or no skills? What can be done?
• Demand for graduates: How can employers be encouraged to make better use of graduate skills in cities?
• Leadership in Recession and Recovery: What are the leadership skills required in recession and recovery? How can local areas build leadership capacity?
