The Event

For individuals, youth unemployment can have ‘scarring’ effects on their future employment prospects and wages. Youth unemployment can also be costly for the national economy, both in terms of lost productivity, but also higher welfare costs. The apprenticeship scheme sought to address this but youth unemployment remains high. At the other end of the spectrum employers have been dealing with the removal of the default retirement age. In this session we will be looking at how this impacts upon the age profile of work forces, the potential challenges this presents employers with and examine the circumstances in which employers can impose a retirement age. Finally, we will provide a roundup of the recent case law on age discrimination and will draw out lessons for employers to learn.

Questions to be covered include:

  • What are the steps employers should take when engaging apprentices?
  • What are the management issues that commonly arise when hiring apprentices?
  • What are the legal issues unique to apprentices and how do we demystify this commonly misunderstood area of employment law?
  • Can an imposed retirement age ever be justified?
  • Is imposing a mandatory retirement age helpful to an organisation or does it lead it to divisive practices?
  • In the absence of a mandatory retirement age what challenges may an ageing workforce present an employer and how best these can be managed?

Why should you attend?

Each session will include an informative presentation from Dickinson Dees LLP as well as interactive discussions to illustrate the practical implications of the latest legal developments.
